No, the same gene silencing mechanisms aren't at work in plastids; that's another benefit I neglected to mention. Position effect also hasn't been observed with plastid genes.

Thanks for writing this, Cody. It's a nice addition to the topics we discuss. Transgenic plastids doesn't get a lot of attention, but enough that there have been some myths about it spread around. Looking forward to some future debunking.

Also, I wonder if the same gene silencing mechanisms are at work in the plastids as in the nucleus? Is this something that we have information about? I'm curious, given the different genetics of plastids, and the sheer number of them, if issues some researchers have been having with gene silencing could be addressed by putting the genes in plastids?

I don't know if I'd call it goal-post moving, exactly, but there are a lot of questionable statements in this article that I plan to address in my next posts. Curiously, while the main text of the article is freely available, access to the references requires a £20 annual membership fee, and I just don't have that kind of weird-looking money.

One questionable statement in the article that I'll go ahead and address now is the idea that Pal Maliga paints a "somewhat less rosy picture on chloroplast transformation." From all that I've read, Dr. Maliga is optimistically realistic about the promises of plastid transformation, which is a far cry from the "less rosy" line -- a line that isn't even supported by the paragraph that follows it! Then again, maybe I could get Dr. Maliga to clarify his views by walking downstairs and asking him...

What a coincidence, I was just looking at the Arabidopsis chloroplast genome this morning at Gramene.

Looking forward to the next installment. And looking forward to what happens when the anti-GMO folks have to deal with this. I expect some goal-post moving....
