Have you heard of any biotech traits that aren’t listed on Biofortified’s Biotech traits page? Post what you know and help us make a more complete list!

In the list of herbicide resistant traits, there is also resistance to glufinosate marketed under the name “Liberty Link”. Pioneer has a trait for resistance to ALS inhibitor herbicides in in the approval pipeline (“Optimum GAT”).

Virus resistance:
The USDA is doing trials of a variety of plum resistant to plum pox virus called “HoneySweet”. source:http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/br/plumpox/ There is also the ever elusive virus-resistant yellow crookneck squash that is resistant to the zucchini yellow mosaic and watermelon mosaic viruses.

Stress tolerance:
Researchers at cornell developed a variety of rice that could survive being irrigated with brackish water (half the water used for irrigation could come from the sea instead of fresh water) and a host of other abiotic stresses by increases the synthesis of trehalose. source:http://www.pnas.org/content/99/25/15898.long

Treatment for Gaucher disease from transgenic carrot cell culture: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19277123 It is actually further along now, but that’s a nice open access paper to give the background and methods.

Ok, continuing to go through my bookmarks:

Lactoferrin and lysozyme rice: http://www.ventria.com/products/

These were being tested as treatments for acute diarrhea in the third world.

EDIT: Here’s a mainstream article on that: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123835814411966967.html?mod=dist_smartbrief

You recently had a post on the eucalyptus trees, didn’t you? That’s probably a good one. It reminded me of this other tree one:

American chestnut, resistant to blight: Press release http://www.prweb.com/releases/American_Chestnut/UGA_Research/prweb2629434.htm and actual paper: http://www.springerlink.com/content/g0356g8380035482/
